School #27

Dr. Antonia Pantoja was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She studied at the University of Puerto Rico where she obtained a Normal School Diploma in 1942. Upon graduating, she worked as a school teacher for two years in Puerto Rico where she cultivated a profound interest in education and addressing the needs of disadvantaged children.

Dr. Pantoja arrived in the United States in 1944. She lived in New York City where she worked as a welder in a factory. During her years of work in the factory, which involved long hours of hard labor, Dr. Pantoja was subjected to the harsh experience of racism and discrimination against Puerto Ricans. She became an activist in the factory for those who lacked knowledge of labor laws and political power, providing information to other workers about their rights and how to organize a union.

Her most profound contribution to the Puerto Rican community in the United States began in 1958 when she helped create The Puerto Rican Forum, Inc. This action paved the way for the establishment of ASPIRA in 1961. In 1968, ASPIRA became a national organization with associate organizations in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Puerto Rico, with its National Office in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Pantoja also was instrumental in the creation of the Hispanic Youth Adult Association in 1953, which later became the Puerto Rican Association for Community Affairs (PRACA). In 1970 she wrote a proposal and secured funds to establish the Universidad Boricua and the Puerto Rican Research and Resource Center in Washington, D.C. for which she became Chancellor.

Legendary for her role in the education and leadership development of Puerto Rican Youth in the United State and Puerto Rico, Pantoja's greatest honor came in 1997 when she received the highest honor the nation bestows on a civilian, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The naming of a school in the City of Elizabeth after a prominent Latin American is very significant. Along with the dedication of School No. 28 in the name of Juan Pablo Duarte and José Julián Martí, the dedication of School No. 27 marks the first time an Elizabeth public school has been named after a person of Latin American descent. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau report, 49.5% of the 120,000 residents of Elizabeth are of Latin American descent. The name of Dr. Pantoja will give many members of the community a legendary societal figure that they can identify closely with through their heritage.

Acting Superintendent of Schools Pablo Muñoz applauds the selection of Dr. Pantoja as the name for School No. 27. "I am very proud, both as a person who grew up in the Elizabeth Public Schools and as a Latino, that one of Elizabeth's public schools will be dedicated in the honor of Dr. Pantoja," said Muñoz. "Her dedication to improving education and the fact that she shares the same heritage with a large representation of this community makes this dedication very exciting."

Tabula Rasa (' täbyoŏlə ˈräsə; ˈräzə) refers to an absence of preconceived ideas or predetermined goals; a clean slate. The phrase carries baggage from belief systems in which the human mind at birth is viewed as having no innate ideas. Denying what is obvious is practiced as a gesture of resistance by some of the artists, most or all of whom are affected, however indirectly, by the notions derived from existentialism and the nothingness of existence, ennui. Inspired curatorially by the concept of residual information that persists after erasure, the exhibition is one of several to date by Evonne M. Davis concerning the nature of knowing, learning and unlearning.

"I propose to challenge the audience to a game of hide and seek. I will publish the city block (giving the co-ordinates of four intersecting streets) and time-frame in the classified section of the Star Ledger under ‘lost and found’. This will define where and when I will be hidden. I will then hide within this outlined space/time block. I will remain in that position until the allotted time has elapsed."

Works From New Talent Seeking a Boldface Name

The alternative art scene in Newark can be a hit-or-miss proposition, but City Without Walls and Rupert Ravens Contemporary are two galleries that do a pretty good job of finding and promoting talented young and emerging artists. Both are worth a visit at the moment.

The annual Metro show at City Without Walls, one of the oldest juried exhibitions of small works in the country, displays pieces that are 13 inches or less in each direction. The title originally referred to the tradition of moving the art by rail to various cities around New Jersey. Today, the organizers use many forms of transportation, but the exhibition’s premise remains the same: to provide little-known newcomers an opportunity to display their work in a statewide, yearlong touring exhibition.
This year’s show, the 26th, includes 69 works by 43 artists selected by a jury of prominent New York art world figures. It is a slick, handsome exhibition, with the accent on finely detailed figurative paintings. There is also some good photography and, happily, an absence of the kooky stuff that has marred previous shows.
Paintings by Lauren Ennist, Jen Mazza and Claudia Waters catch the eye, partly because they are colorful and partly because they are well executed. The figurative subject matter is often clichéd but shows all three artists, who are still warming up in their careers, trying to expand from the merely pretty into something more serious.
While eclecticism is the norm in these sorts of shows, Metro 26 includes a concentration of excellent photographs. Marco Muñoz won the best in show prize for a series of intimate pictures of youths playing football in a park, shrouded in mist. Collectively titled “Voices From the Fog,” they herald the arrival of a new talent.
Among other outstanding photographs are Aimee Hertog’s wickedly funny “Hamptons Fun v. Iowa Flood,” in which the artist has digitally collaged imagery of people swimming in the Hamptons into flooded urban landscape scenes from Iowa. The juxtaposition is so incongruous and silly that you can’t help but laugh.
As usual, the show is well supplied with collage and sculpture, some of which is interesting, like Jan Huling’s oddball assemblage “Kid Stuff,” combining beading and little cameos. Greg Leshé’s “Mobile Auto-Graph Writing Pile No. 2” is also intriguing, consisting of piles of circular paper covered in line drawings and resting on turntables with wheels. I didn’t see it in motion, so have no idea how it works, but I love its ingenuity.
A fierce creative intelligence is also in abundance nearby at Rupert Ravens Contemporary, Newark’s newest major commercial gallery, which opened in 2007, spread over three levels of an old furniture warehouse on Market Street. The current exhibition is “Next Post,” an impressive show of 18 simultaneous solo projects by artists from Europe and America. It grabs your attention from the moment you walk in the door.
Two colorful projects fill the ground-floor entrance area, Donald Bruschi’s wood and steel sculptures with neon lights and Saya Woolfalk’s odd installation consisting of an exotic sculpture made of trash that resembles an old-fashioned computer in a room with a lime-green floor and blue walls. It is not entirely resolved in my view, but Ms. Woolfalk seems to have the talent to take her strange project to the next level.
Many other surprises await those willing to venture deeper into this behemoth of a space, including Cordy Ryman’s simple but attractive painted geometric sculptures that are made entirely using 2-by-4-inch wood studs. Miya Ando’s refined, subtle works of rolled steel, made of sheets of burnished and chemically treated metal, are also a must-see for anyone interested in post-minimalist contemporary art.
Headlining the show is “Drop,” an inflatable 60-foot orange cone-shaped sculpture by a group of artists known as AK Airways that fills half the length of the second-floor gallery from ceiling to floor. Lighted from inside, it gives off a subtle amber glow. The theme of the work, Mr. Ravens said, was the fragile and provisional nature of human existence.
Other works are equally spectacular, like Gae Savannah’s opulent assemblage sculptures using glass beads, trinkets, reams of gossamer and other cheap objects and materials relating to shopping and the beauty industry. Her assemblages are risky, but when they come together there is a wonderful sense of lushness and overflowing color.
If all this sounds a little too edgy or experimental, the show also includes a couple of paintings by Fred Gutzeit that soothe the soul. His subject is the landscape, chiefly scenes of rocks and foliage. Here, among hard-core assemblages, junk and inflatable sculptures, they look like bashful visitors from another world.

Joe Weil, 50, consistently draws on the muse of Elizabeth, where three generations of his family attended St. Mary of the Assumption High School. His books include “Painting the Christmas Trees” (Texas Review Press) and “What Remains” (Nightshade Press), which includes an imagined encounter between the actress Susan Sarandon and a boozy and besotted narrator.
Mr. Weil explained the long-gone setting of the poem, a seedy bar on the Newark border called Two Friends: “It was owned, literally, by two friends who then stopped being friends, but still ran the bar together for 25 years. We called them Surly and Surly. They were both absolutely bald and never smiled.”
He added: “It’s not just people who are in love with each other who start to look alike. Sworn enemies start to look alike after 25 years.”
For Mr. Weil, Elizabeth has become part of his muscle memory. “In a poem, it becomes part of the rhythms, the speech patterns, the rhythm of your lines. I speak Elizabeth. I have a voice somewhat like Joe Pesci’s, but two bus stops over.”
BJ Ward, 41, is the author of “Gravedigger’s Birthday,” “17 Love Poems With No Despair” and “Landing in New Jersey With Soft Hands,” from North Atlantic Books. He grew up in Warren County and lives there in Changewater, which straddles the Musconetcong River. His poems don’t tell us about where we live so much as they create places that are even more compelling.
“For me it’s a question of does the place help define your poetry, or can your poems help redefine the place you live in? Would Rutherford be the same if William Carlos Williams hadn’t lived there?” he said during an interview at the Dodge Poetry Festival.
Later, he said: “Place is what we reinvent in a lot of poems, in order to make it truer. So often we forsake what people might call accuracy for the sake of truth or truthfulness. If my hometown needs a priest to try to shut down the library, I will invent a priest to shut down the library if that’s what my poem needs, even if that’s not what occurs. In the act of writing a poem, your fidelity shifts from the world outside you that you observe at first, to the world inside that’s asking to be expressed.”
He loves living in rural Warren County in part because “it’s largely unimagined.”
“I’d find it much more difficult to reinvent Manhattan,” he said.

Morning at the Elizabeth Arch
The winos rise as beautiful as deer.
Look how they stagger from their sleep
as if the morning were a river
against which they contend.

What I’m waiting for is Susan Sarandon.

Sure, she says, sure,
and, lifting up my trouser leg
with one dainty and silk-stockinged foot,
she pulls down my black crew sock
with her pedicured toes,
and tells the barkeep
to bring us the bottle.

Burying Father
In Seaside Heights, NJ, my father would shade us
with his huge beer belly that curved down
over the copper snap of his red cut-offs.
My brother and I found refuge from the sun there,
beneath the frame that was a delight to bury.
He stood over us for the length of digging,
positioning so his shadow would shelter us.
The surface sand was easiest, ran through our hands
quicker than dimes as the ocean registered
the latest items of its ancient complaint. Then
the lower soil, compact, years of compression
(what did we know of compression?), harder
to get through, pull up, finally discard. We knew our father
wouldn’t fit in any shallow ditch — too immense
for that easy burial — and so in the darkness we pushed.
Back then I hadn’t read much but I had read about treasures
in Boy’s Life, all sorts of value too deep for detectors,
covered by years of tidal shifts and wind’s constant backhoe.
We never found anything. How I miss those days now —
in 20 years, my brother and I would be friends
who hardly speak, but in those days we’d shovel together,
doing our best to bury Dad. How we enjoyed his shadow —
a good darkness then — never thinking about the unhealthiness
of such an imposing frame, or anything as grave.
